Irish Liverpool fan killed crossing highway close to Milan

Liverpool fan Sean Cox dies after being attacked before Champions League match in 2018

An Irish Liverpool fan who was left in a coma after being attacked by Roma supporters before a Champions League match in 2018 has died.

Sean Cox, 55, was crossing a highway close to Milan with his brother when he was attacked by a group of Roma fans hours before the semi-final first leg in April 2018.

Cox suffered serious head injuries in the attack and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. He underwent emergency surgery and was placed in an induced coma, but never regained consciousness.

In a statement released on behalf of the Cox family, they said: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Sean. He passed away peacefully in the early hours of this morning, surrounded by his family.

"Sean was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a friend to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him."

Liverpool FC said in a statement: "The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with the family and friends of Sean Cox at this incredibly sad time.

"Sean was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, and our hearts go out to all his loved ones. He will be forever missed by those who knew him."
